Gluten-free and living in the Greater Boston area? Viva Mexican Grill and Tequileria located in Wayland, MA is a must eat at restaurant. The food is fabulous, the waitstaff is welcoming and the margaritas a gigantic.
Mark really wanted to check out Viva but I must admit I was a little concerned. I have had some cross contamination issues at Mexican restaurants and despite my basic grasp of the Spanish language, explaining the gluten-free diet has been very hard at authentic Mexican restaurants. We decided to check out Viva Mexican Grill and Tequileria, figuring at worst, if I couldn’t explain the gluten-free diet, we could head to another restaurant that had a gluten-free menu.
The host at Viva was fabulous. I explained my food allergies and he was completely understanding and receptive. He went down the menu item by item explaining what I could eat, how to order it so that it was safe and checked with the chef on all of my questions.
The food was delicious. We began our dinner with a gigantic bowl of guacamole, that was made fresh at our table and huge margaritas. This was followed by the Queso Fundido
Oaxacan cheese skillet which is a dish of golden broiled cheese, fresh roasted poblano peppers and mushrooms, served with warm corn tortillas. We completed our meal with a main course of Chiles en Nogada with Chicken, Poblano chiles with aromatics and spices topped with a walnut based cream sauce and pomegranate seeds and served with warm corn tortillas. The flavors were tantalizing as they danced across our tongues. The meal was sweet from the pomegranate seed mixed the savory rich flavor of the cream sauce. Absolutely out of this world.
So hope on the Mass Pike and head over to Viva Mexican Grill and Tequileria in Wayland, MA. This delicious, affordable restaurant is well worth the drive. And let this also be a great lesson to Celiacs everywhere, don’t be afraid to talk to the waitstaff and explain your gluten-allergy. You might be surprised at the accommodations restaurants are willing to make to meet your dining needs.
